Watch: The importance of Irish Sign Language (ISL)

Irish Sign Language is the first language of over 5,000 Deaf people in Ireland. One of those is Luke Doyle, a Sixth Year student at the Holy Family School for the Deaf in Cabra, and he joined Cathal in the news2day studio to tell us more about ISL. Working with ISL Interpreter Orla MacCabe, Luke explained the importance of the language, and why people should learn it - the video plays out at the top of the article. Irish Sign Language Awareness Week, which runs alongside International Week of Deaf People, aims to raise awareness of the importance of Irish Sign Language and the full achievement of human rights of Deaf people.
