Peterborough City Hall raises Deaf flag for International Week of Deaf People

International Week of Deaf People and the International Day of Sign Languages were celebrated at Peterborough City Hall as the Sign Union (Deaf) flag was raised on City Hall’s flagpole Wednesday. City Hall and the Centennial Fountain on Little Lake will be lit in blue all week to mark the occasion. Mayor Jeff Leal and Jennifer Endicott, ASL instructor at Fleming College and Trent University, and interpreter Vera Goudie celebrate the International Week of Deaf People (Sept. 21–27) and the International Day of Sign Languages (Sept. 23) as the Sign Union (Deaf) flag was raised outside Peterborough City Hall on Sept. 23. International Week of Deaf People — running this year from Sept. 21-27 — has been observed annually during the last full week of September since 1958. The World Federation of the Deaf initiated the movement to raise awareness about the rights of Deaf people and the importance of sign language. The Deaf flag raising is a global initiative held annually on Sept. 23 to celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages and the International Week of Deaf People. Approved by the World Federation of the Deaf during its 20th General Assembly in July 2023, the flag stands as a powerful symbol of unity and pride for sign language communities around the world.
