Rondônia prosecutors meet Porto Velho Deaf community leader on Libras access, weigh a 24/7 video interpreting center

·

The human rights unit of Rondônia's state prosecutor's office (MPRO) in Brazil met Eduardo Lima Brito, a representative of Porto Velho's Deaf community, along with MPRO's own Libras service staff. Participants described cases where the lack of a sign language interpreter harmed Deaf people's care, especially in health services, as well as barriers in public safety and documents. They discussed a round-the-clock Libras relay center where any Deaf person at a clinic, police station or pharmacy could reach an interpreter by video call.
